Diane Abbott gets so many abusive messages her staff send a bundle to the police once a week. Labour’s shadow home secretary revealed the abuse regularly includes threats to rape and kill her and often includes the N-word.
A recent survey revealed Ms Abbott receives one third of all the abuse sent to British politicians, The Times reported. She said: ‘I don’t want to have a hierarchy of hate crime but I would say the main reason I get so much abuse online is because I’m both black and a woman. ‘Women get more abuse than men and black women get more abuse than white women.’
The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP believes the ability to comment anonymously has created more abuse. She added: ‘You see other people saying things so you think you can say things too. My own view is that anonymity is the problem.’ This week Ms Abbott has been hitting the airwaves and touring TV studios to put more pressure on her Tory counterpart Amber Rudd over the Windrush scandal which has seen British residents who arrived from the Caribbean threatened with deportation.
